DIY Produce Wash

Keep Your Farmers Market Haul Fresh

DIY Produce Wash

Once you get home with your farmers market haul, take care of it! Consider making your own fruit and vegetable wash to help loosen debris, remove pesticide residue, and eliminate some of the bacteria that may be on your produce. A good rinse before eating is always a smart move.

This easy, homemade fruit and veggie wash is a handy trick for cleaning your produce when you bring it home and it can even help it last longer! Best of all, it's natural, inexpensive, and made with just three simple ingredients: water, white vinegar, and lemon juice. The vinegar and lemon are a great way to help remove bacteria from the surface of your fruits and veggies.

Solution:

1 cup white vinegar
4 cups water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
*Add everything to a spray bottle and shake well to combine.

Place your fruits or vegetables (do not use of leafy greens) in a colander in the sink. Spray them liberally with the mixture and let sit for 2 to 5 minutes. Once finished soaking, give them a thorough rinse under fresh water. The vinegar works its magic, but be sure to rinse it off well after it's done its job.

Thanks to The Tosa Farmers Market for the recipe!
