What's in Season: August 1 At the Market
The bounty of Wisconsin is in full show in August at our local Farmers Markets
The hot days of August lead to vegetables and fruits in abundance at Wisconsin Farmers Markets. Cucurbits are in abundance - those are cucumbers, melons and summer squash. The most diligent farmers are eager to get their first ripe tomatoes. Tiny cherry tomatoes arrive first, followed later in August by the big slicers that go so well on burgers and sandwiches.
August is a bountiful time for fruits. Melons are full of flavor and help you stay hydrated in the heat. Stone fruits like peaches, plums, apricots are around, but you will have to get to the market early for a chance at getting the limited supply of these delicious summer fruits. Blueberries are abundant and you can find them at Farmers' markets and You-Pick farms statewide.
The most iconic August vegetable is sweet corn. From roadside stands, farmers markets, and grocery stores, sweet corn is available throughout Wisconsin in August. Grill, boil, steam, or just eat it raw.
